The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
